The caves were excavated in the first century B.C.The caves were moulded by the typical intricate carvings of  Buddhist architecture. It was first brought to notice in the 19th century by Vishnu Sastri, and soon after visited by Mr. Law, then collector of Thana. The cave-in charge showed me the only inscription on the front of the Chaitya cave which gives information about donors.

It is said that the earthquake in the year 1900 has damaged the caves but still the structure is definitely worth watching and visiting. There are few such ancient Buddhist caves in Maharashtra. Another one at Sanjay Gandhi National Park hills called Kanheri caves. It is a common feature that all these Buddhist caves are located at the foothills and hidden from the view by the thick forest in front of them. Mainly it is because of the meditation purpose and monks are supposed to stay away from the worldly life.

The water which comes from the cave top becomes a waterfall and it enhances the beauty of the caves and the surrounding areas. The lush green of the forest further attracts the visitors during the monsoon season.  There are many seasonal waterfalls and small streams on the way. You can also dip into the Ulhas river while returning if you hike in a summer season.

Four main caves can be seen at Kondana:

  1. Chaitya: Chaitya is the main prayer hall where you can see the Dagoba (stupa) inside the cave.
  2. Vihara: Vihara is most a common or entertainment room.
  3. Cave No.3 is a plain Vihara with nine cells. It is in a ruined state.
  4. Cave no.4 has a row of nine cells at the back of what now looks like a natural hollow under the cliff.

The trail to Kondana caves is pretty easy and pleasant as it is surrounded by beautiful natural surroundings. It is more pleasant during the Monsoon season due to lush greenery, waterfalls, and the freshness of the air and the trees around.

You can enjoy a few waterfalls on the way during the monsoon but be alert that some times these waterfalls certainly increase the flow whenever there are heavy rainfalls. So if you are going there during heavy rain in groups, It is advisable to carry a robe with you. The trail is well marked. You also have to cross the  Ulhas River.

The caves are open for all the visitors and the best time to visit is winter due to favorable weather (Cool and calm weather). Apart from hikers and nature enthusiasts, the caves receive many Buddhist visitors for Darshan as it is sacred place for the Buddhist people.
