Historical significance

There are over 300 forts built over the northern Sahyadri. Many rulers and dynasties have ruled the region. But due to difficult terrain of the Sahyadri’s works well for Shivaji Guerrilla techniques. The Marathi king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is one of the most iconic rulers and warriors in the history of Maharashtra. Among several other things, Shivaji was known for his expertise in establishing forts at strategic locations. In the process of founding the Maratha empire, Shivaji conquered, built and re-built several forts along with western India. It is said that he conquered 130 forts built 18 forts. According to historian Jadunath Sarkar, Shivaji owned some 240–280 forts at the time of his death 1680.

Sahyadri is also a paradise for the Trekkers and nature enthusiast.

It offers some amazing Rocky Mountains and pinnacles, historic hill forts, steep canyons, and some massive rock faces. These areas offer a variety of climbing opportunities for climbers and hikers. A perfect destination for a day hike or range trek, Kalsubai is the highest peak in Sahyadri.

Sahyadri is my training spot to sharpen my hiking skills, endurance, and strength training before I go to any Himalayan trek.

Monsoon Magic in Sahyadri

Best time to explore Sahyadri is in Monsoon season. Monsoon always bring joy to the Hikers and nature enthusiasts after a hot summer. Because the monsoon brings out the real beauty of Sahyadri, The entire mountain range transforms into lush green in colour. the flowers bloom everywhere and spread freshness in the air. The lakes fill with sparkling rainwater. Hundreds of waterfalls appear in monsoon and add more beauty to the Sahyadri. One can also witness the magic of reverse waterfall in some areas. Exploring Sahyadri in monsoon is a treat to our eyes and peace for our soul., While hundreds of hikers/trekkers and nature enthusiasts head to the Sahyadri mountains to explore the true beauty of Sahyadri.  It is a perfect weekend destination to escape from the polluted air and hectic city life. Many of these forts have become the favorite hiking spot for the hikers. Each of these forts still reflects the history of the political and cultural significance of glorious Maratha warriors. There are many trekking organizers who organize the Sahyadri treks during the weekend and the national holiday.  Many experienced trekkers and groups they hike by themselves in groups or solo. There are many serious and casual hikers exploring various hiking spots in Sahyadri in Monsoon every year.

When I moved to Mumbai from Uttaranchal. I thought that I won’t be able to hike anymore. However, when I come to know about the Sahyadri, I was excited and my hope has been restored.   I started my hiking in Sahyadri with few reputed trekking organizers like Mumbai travelers, Nomad Adventures, etc. I have been Hiking in Sahyadri for the last 10 years now.  Sahyadri is the best opportunity to be in the lap of nature and distress myself. Sahyadri has given me an opportunity to explore Marathi history and cultural aspects. Sahyadri has taught me many life lessons. I have learned how to live a balanced and humble life. It also made me realized how we are interdependent with each other and importance of living a harmonious life.

Hiking and other outdoor activities have become popular amongst city youngsters and, in process, they learn to appreciate nature and become more familiar with their history and culture. However, it is trekking organizer’s responsible for educate them to those budding hikers for being responsible trekking in the hills.  I have observed that sometimes, many casual hikers in groups have come to explore nature but they tend to pollute such a pristine and serene place by leaving the trash behind and play loud music to disturb nature and bring alcohol and drink near the fort and ancient temple. This is disrespectful to the mother nature. Every fort has either Devi or Lord Shiv and Ganesh temple.

We come across many bases remote villages in the Sahyadri ranges. They still follow their ancestors by living a balanced and ethical life. They live very close to nature and understand nature very well. They offer delicious traditional Marathi breakfast and lunch with minimal charges. We take help from those villagers as guides to some difficult trek. We can learn many things from them. Though they live a very simple life yet they are very helpful and live happily.

I met many wonderful, energetic, and inspiring hikers of mixed age. I always enjoy hiking in Sahyadri.  Hiking Shayadri in Monsoon is always joy and refreshing and I will continue to do so till I am in Mumbai. This is how I live my balanced life in Mumbai. I work hard and sincerely, and at the same time, I follow my passion as well.
